Today, Facebook is announcing a new initiative to help provide independent, credible research about the role of social media in elections, as well as democracy more generally. It will be funded by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, Democracy Fund, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Charles Koch Foundation, the Omidyar Network, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
At the heart of this initiative will be a group of scholars who will:
Facebook will not have any right to review or approve their research findings prior to publication.
We’re excited about this initiative for two important reasons.
First, we think it’s an important new model for partnerships between industry and academia. Second, the last two years have taught us that the same Facebook tools that help politicians connect with their constituents — and different communities debate the issues they care about — can also be misused to manipulate and deceive.
We have made real progress since Brexit and the 2016 US presidential election in fighting fake news, as well as combating foreign interference, in elections in France, Germany, Alabama and Italy. But there is much more to do — and we don’t have all the answers. This initiative will enable Facebook to learn from the advice and analysis of outside experts so we can make better decisions — and faster progress.
In consultation with the foundations funding the initiative, Facebook will invite respected academic experts to form a commission which will then develop a research agenda about the impact of social media on society — starting with elections. The focus will be entirely forward looking. And our goals are to understand Facebook’s impact on upcoming elections — like Brazil, India, Mexico and the US midterms — and to inform our future product and policy decisions. The initial term of the commission will be one year and membership will be determined in the coming weeks. We are keen to have a broad range of experts — with different political outlooks, expertise and life experiences, gender, ethnicity and from a broad range of countries.Share
In many ways, 2017 was an epic year for Houston’s restaurant scene. Ahead of hosting the Super Bowl (and after), the city became home to dozens of exciting new eateries across a variety of cuisines, price points, and vibes.
But of course, with this growth comes change, and that means that some spots were forced to close their doors this year. In 2017, restaurateurs had more to contend with than the usual uncertainty of the restaurant business thanks to Hurricane Harvey, which has been blamed for more than one shutter. As 2018 bears down, pour one out for these 5 now-shuttered eateries.
In March, Houston said goodbye to Oxheart , Chef Justin Yu’s award-winning (and much-beloved eatery). The restaurant had racked up pretty much every accolade possible, including a spot in Eater critic Bill Addison’s heart. Fortunately, Yu has already returned with his creative new restaurant Theodore Rex, and is serving up some of the city’s best bar fare at his Heights watering hole Better Luck Tomorrow. Still, there’s a little bit of lingering sadness over the loss of a place that was as special as Oxheart.
“Sugar Hooker” Rebecca Masson’s bakery survived Hurricane Harvey, only to sustain extensive flood damage a few months later . Masson is already hard at work getting her bakery back online, and she’s been popping up for her Saturday Morning Bake Sales at restaurants across the city. Expect for Fluff Bake Bar to return stronger than ever in 2018. Need a Fluffernutter (or a dozen) in the meantime? Place an online order for takeaway via Fluff’s website .

, which forced the restaurant to close its doors as Holley dealt with “residual damage” from the storm. Considering Holley’s inventive hand with seafood, here’s hoping that 2018 brings an exciting new home for the chef.

It racked up plenty of accolades for its chic design and Gulf Coast-inspired cuisine, and even scored a coveted visit from First Lady Michelle Obama while it was opened. Fortunately, the spot has since been turned into swanky steakhouse Doris Metropolitan, and Hildebrand has found a new home at his fun new restaurant FM Kitchen Bar.
